Double-sided pillow pattern - FREE!

I wanted to have a pillow with a bit more texture than what I see in the stores.  I found this great, soft, super bulky yarn to try out, but when I worked up one side of a pillow, it used up 95% of the yarn.  And this yarn wasn't cheap!  So I decided to make a double-sided pillow using a worsted yarn on the opposite side.  I love the result, so I decided to share the patterns!  I used a standard Ikea pillow to stuff it and then sewed it shut, but more ambitious folks could install a zipper or Velcro.

Note: When doing hdc or dc I do a ch 2 at the start of the row, that counts as the first stitch of the row, so when crocheting the next row above the ch 2, make sure you end on the top of the ch 2 instead of missing a stitch!  Hopefully the pattern is clear.

Materials needed:
- 100 yds of super bulky yarn
- 250 yds of worsted weight yarn in a complementary color (I chose close to matching!)
- 5 mm crochet hook
- 15 mm crochet hook
- 1 tapestry needle

Side 1: Worsted Weight Zig-Zag / Chevron pattern

Hook: 5 mm
Yarn I used: Bernat Super Value in True Grey, ~250 yds
Stitches: (click here for a good instruction guide for basic stitches)
ch - chain
sc - single crochet
hdc - half double crochet
fpdtr - front post double treble crochet (instructions can be found here)

Each vertical zig zag takes approximately 2.5" at my gauge, so you can adjust the pattern accordingly to be the correct size for your pillow.  My pillow (and this pattern) has 5 repeats with a sc + dc border for a 17" pillow.

Please refer to the chart for placement details of the fpdtr stitches.

Row 1: ch 43, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc across (42 st per row throughout pattern)
Row 2: ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc), hdc across
Row 3: ch 1, sc across, ending on the top of the ch 2
Row 4: ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc) *hdc, skip next 3 st, (fpdtr in hdc 1 row below next stitch) 3 times, hdc in 4th stitch from last hdc, 3 hdc* repeat between *'s 4 more times, hdc
Row 5: ch 1, sc across, ending on the top of the ch 2
Row 6: ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc), hdc across
Row 7: ch 1, sc across, ending on the top of the ch 2
Row 8: ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc), *4 hdc, (fpdtr in hdc 1 row below, 3 stitches backwards) 3 times, hdc* repeat between *'s 4 more times, hdc
Row 9: ch 1, sc across, ending on the top of the ch 2
Repeat rows 2-9 until you reach the desired height (for me this was 4.5 more times)

Optionally can add a border around to increase the size or add detail.  I added 2 rounds: sc around (3 sc in corner stitches) and dc around (5 dc in corner stitches)

Assembly

Using a tapestry needle, sew the Zig Zag piece into the Bulky piece.  I chose to have the bulky textured side frame the worsted side, see the pictures for more details.  Sew it shut with a pillow inside and enjoy!

This is my first original pattern so feedback is, of course, welcome!

Please feel free to make and sell items made from this pattern, but please link back to my post if you do.  Please do not copy my pattern and claim it as your own, or publish the pattern elsewhere without permission.  Happy crafting!
